L: “Your strenuous efforts lie where?”
Q: “_____________ and ______________.”
L: “Did they avail?”
Q: “Nope.”
L: “So now what will you do in light of your impotence?”
Q: “I will concoct a cocktail of apathy and cynicism.”
L: “Won’t that be problematic?”
Q: “I have something else already labeled ‘The Problem.’ ”
L: “How will you react toward A?”
Q: “A is disruptive. I shall tell him to leave.”
L: “Do you really think that A is the type of person who can be told what to do?”
Q: “I suppose when it comes down to it I shall have to beg A to leave.”
L: “Do you think A will grant your request?”
Q: “Yes.”
[27 second pause of bewildered contemplation]
L: “What are your thoughts on B?”
Q: “She is foul, and I despise her presence.”
L: “Do you think that A shares your opinion of B?”
Q: “Of course!”
L: “…Have you been following the news about A?”
Q: “A is young, and we’ve all made mistakes in the early part of our careers.”
L: “You know she is his daughter right?”
Q: “Balderdash! Blasphemy! Impossible!”
L: “No joke. B is precious in A’s sight. His love for her would have to be considered by most to be non compos mentis.”
Q: “But certainly A would not risk missing an opportunity to impress J in order to have a heart-to-heart with B!?”
L: “I get the distinct impression that A is not attempting to impress J at all! …In fact, it seems that ‘trying to impress’ is intentionally excluded from A’s game plan.”
