Anger. Where did it come from? Inescapable insecurity & helplessness (weakness/smallness/vulnerability/dependency). Humans are Zombi-esque in their ravenous lust to feel autonomous (anti-dependent/anti-vulnerable/anti-susceptible/anti-powerless&weak). Delusional… we GLUT ourselves on the myth that we are CAPABLE of Control & Correctness. We are the Chaldeans – – – > we are dreaded and fearsome; our justice and dignity go forth from themselves (Habakkuk 1:7).
We are ANGRY ANGRY ANGRY because we are WEAK WEAK WEAK.
We RAGE RAGE RAGE because we are HELPLESS HELPLESS HELPLESS.
Is there anyone we can turn to who is more powerful than us (perhaps even self-existent, self-sustaining, infinitely and perfectly powerful and wise, incomprehensibly true, good, and beautiful)?
If so …does that being/person(s) SAY, Reveal, Communicate anything to WRETCHED-WEAKLINGS like us?
“You are weak. I compare you to sheep. And not ‘just sheep’, but sheep amongst wolves. Imagine it. Ponder it. You are a sheep surrounded by wolves. How do you feel? Threatened? Defensive? Scared? Paranoid? Paralyzed w/ Fear? Suspicious? Insecure?
You want to complain:
O LORD, how long shall I cry for help,
and you will not hear?
Or cry to you “Violence!”
and you will not save?
Why do you make me see iniquity,
and why do you idly look at wrong?
Destruction and violence are before me;
strife and contention arise.
So the law is paralyzed,
and justice never goes forth.
For the wicked surround the righteous;
so justice goes forth perverted.
Here’s the Lord’s reply:
You will be oppressed. You will be delivered over to their unjust courts and flogged. You will be in the human hands of a dreaded and fearsome people; whose justice and dignity go forth from themselves (people whose natural orientations and appetites are just like yours). Your privilege amidst this oppression is to not come proclaiming the testimony of God with lofty speech or wisdom. …but decide to know nothing except Jesus Christ and him crucified. Be with people in weakness and in fear and much trembling, and your speech and your message are not to be in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that real faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God (1 Corinthians 2:2-5).
When you are oppressed do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour. For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
The oppression will strike VERY CLOSE TO HOME – – – > Brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death, and you will be hated by all for my name’s sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next, for truly, I say to you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes. A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. It is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household (Matthew 10:19-25).
So have no fear of them, for nothing is covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. What I tell you in the dark, say in the light, and what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops. And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven, but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven (Matthew 10:26-33).
Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. And a person’s enemies will be those of his own household. Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it (Matthew 10:34-39).
We are ANGRY because we FEAR man.
We are ANXIOUS because we FEAR man.
We are ANGRY & ANXIOUS because we are FIXATED on man.
We are sincerely invited to FIX OUR EYES on Jesus, the Author and Perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. …All authority in heaven and on earth belongs to Him.
HOW DOES THIS KING (King of any/all/every king[s]) DECIDE TO USE HIS AUTHORITY & WIELD HIS UNPARALLELED POWER?
There are some extreme things about this King. SHOCKING, Unbelievable, Unprecedented, Exceedingly UNFAIR, hard-to-swallow things about this King.
For example: everyone (even & especially criminals/wicked/depraved/desperate/wretched/needy people) who thirsts is WHOLEHEARTEDLY invited to come to the King. Without any resume of personal acclaim and accomplishments, without any self-manufactured merit. And in the presence of this completely pure King who will punish all unrighteousness – cutting the wicked into pieces, putting them in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth – the King will say to these lowly, needy, desperate beggars who helpless hang on Him, “come to the waters; he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.”
Seek the LORD while he may be found; call upon him while he is near; let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the LORD, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts (Isaiah 55:6-9).
THIS IS STILL RELEVANT & TRUE & POSSIBLE TODAY!
In June 2015 the people of Emanuel AME Church in Charleston SC were in the type of situation Jesus promises His people in Matthew 10.
How did they respond to their murderous and relentlessly evil persecutor?
They forgave him.
They advised him to repent (be repulsed by his sins).
They asked God directly to have mercy on his soul.
They told the God-hating, racist, murderer that if he repented and confessed his need for Jesus, that he would “Be OK.”
Church member Anthony Thompson said, “I forgive you. My family forgives you …We would like you to take this opportunity to repent. … Do that, and you’ll be better off than you are right now.”
Church member Felecia Sanders said, “As we said in Bible Study, we enjoyed you …may God have mercy on you.”
Just as my fellow family members (Anthony & Felecia …more PRIMARY than their ethnicity is there relationship to their ETERNAL FAMILY IN CHRIST [which, per their request very well may include Dylan Roof!]) invited a hate-filled oppressor to repent and believe in Jesus – so I also invite the hate-filled, angry people in Uptown CLT to repent and put all their hope and trust in Jesus (the Author & Perfecter of their own INFINITELY-NEEDED Atonement, and Executor of Perfect Justice on the Day of Judgement).
