We are at war against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

In war the mantra is “we will do whatever it takes.”

The Word of God must be proclaimed all the way to our dying breath.

Money from mama or not, let us die doing the Word-centric work of the Kingdom of Heaven.

False Humility

“…thousands of humans have been brought to think that humility means pretty women trying to believe they are ugly and clever men trying to believe they are fools. And since what they are trying to believe may, in some cases, be manifest nonsense, they cannot succeed in believing it and we have the chance of keeping their minds endlessly revolving on themselves in an effort to achieve the the impossible.”[Jack]

Letter to a Church Member

March 22, 2016

Dear So&So,
I took your advice and read 1 Thessalonians. I’m curious to know what you thought about the following portions of chapters 2 & 3:
2:11-12 – For you know how, like a father with his children, we exhorted each one of you and encouraged you and charged you to walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory. *Do you view your pastors like fathers? Over the past 10 years or so I’ve certainly feared Tom Hawkes as a father, and nowadays I fear Jason and Brett as ‘fathers’ (i.e. God-appointed authorities in my life [Heb. 13:17]). The Thessalonians are a delight to their pastors because they “actually received the word of God, which they heard from ‘mere men’, and they accepted it not as the word of men but as what it really is, the word of God, which is at work in believers” (v.13). What do you make of this? Does this describe ECPC? Does this describe you? …I suppose the anti-Thessalonians would be those folks who show up to ECPC as food critics (i.e. they don’t rejoice in the inerrant, inspired, active & living Word of God as rich food for their souls, but instead they criticize & complain …and perhaps the extent of their wonder & awe is aimed at themselves as they ask, “Why do I even keep going to this church where I’m never content or satisfied?”).
Paul seems to be in awe of the miraculous receptivity of the Thessalonians – at least that’s the impression I get when I read what he says in 2:13, “we also thank God constantly for this!” When people give constant thanks for something, I call that obsession and awe! And this is all the more unbelievably impressive to Paul as he points out that the Thessalonian’s faith in the Word of God cost them dearly (2:14-15).
I am very curious to know if you think Paul would say to the Corinthian church, what he says to the Thessalonians in 2:17 & 19 – …we endeavored the more eagerly and with great desire to see you face to face …For what is our hope or joy or crown of boasting before our Lord Jesus at his coming? Is it not you? For you are our glory and joy.
What is your hope, glory, joy, and crown of boasting before our Lord Jesus at His coming?
And finally, 3:1-2 – Therefore when we could bear it no longer, we were willing to be left behind at Athens alone, and we sent Timothy, our brother and God’s coworker in the gospel of Christ, to establish and exhort you in your faith.
Do you agree that not every church is receptive to pastoral care – as Paul defines it, and is so so so eager to send to church members (i.e. est. and exhort church members in the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen)?
What do you want to be established in and exhorted about? For example, at ECPC a person will be VERY ANNOYED and IRRITATED if they don’t desperately want to be established in, and exhorted re: Hebrews 12:2; Luke 24:26-27; 1 Cor. 2:2; 2 Cor. 12:9; and John 12:24 (there’s even an emphasis on ordained suffering as the seed of the church in 1 Thessalonians 3:3-4). Seeing that a person is not hungry for exhortation and establishment when it comes to these biblically emphatic all-eclipsing truths, the question becomes – what is this person in the mood for? Of course this is an excellent question, because if you take a person to a restaurant they hate – they will probably only grumble and refuse to eat.
What advice do you have for me as I encounter church members who are not hungry for pastoral care as Paul describes it in 3:2?
Thanks for telling me about this passage of Scripture and encouraging me to read it for myself. I have found it depressing (juxtaposing it with the church in Corinth) and edifying (rejoicing to see the hunger and teachability of the church in Thessalonica).

Passionless orthodoxy has spawned a generation of rigid Xn leaders who simply cannot relate to people.

For passion on 3/18/16 READ PS. 73.

Prescriptions that fail to get at the root of an undefined problem can do real damage.

Counseling models must demonstrate more than mere consistency w/ Scripture; they must in fact emerge from it.

People choose and think and feel and crave in ways that can be at least partially understood and thoughtfully dealt with.

Nature is NOT our textbook on life. The Bible is.

How do I resist the urge to masturbate?

I worry about $$$ a lot. How do I stop?

What do I do with the fear of living alone that I’ve felt ever since the rape?

I just can’t get close to people. How can I get over my social awkwardness?

Why do I feel so empty? Where’s the abundant life?

How should I handle my husband? He worries so much about how our kids will turn out that he’s always preaching to them.

When the range of permissible questions is narrowed, our understanding of complicated problems tends to become simplistic.

How can I find fulfillment in life?

How am I supposed to raise my kids so they will turn out right?

Why can’t I relax around people?

Why am I uncomfortable when meeting new people?

Why am I jealous of the success of others, especially those in my field?

What do I do with the terrible pain I feel whenever I remember my mother’s suicide?

How do I cope with the awful fact that my father was too weak ever to love me, to be there for me?

What am I supposed to do with my deep desire to be a woman b/c I’m so scared of being a man?

How do I handle my terrible fear that if I ever expressed how I really feel, no one would really want me?

Why do I feel so threatened when someone successfully proves that I’ve been wrong about something?

Why do I not want to admit my internal struggles?

The Scriptures will never come fully alive until we bring all of who we are to its truth.

Deep Longings. Evaluative Thinking. Active Choosing. Emotional Experiencing. [DL. ET. AC. EE.].

Deeply longing for something personal.

Rationally evaluating what is happening.

Willfully pursuing a chosen direction.

Experiencing one’s world emotionally.

A personal being who longs deeply; A rational being who thinks; a volitional being who chooses; an emotional being who feels.

The essence of holiness is other-centeredness, a worshipful love for God and a love for others that motivates sacrificial care for them.

The whole point of self-examination is to learn that we are dependent beings whose life requires union with God.

Counseling involves an uncovering of what has been deeply hidden for the purpose of promoting the simple but profound awareness that we need God; we need His forgiveness, His power, His life.

Doctors, Lawyers, and SBSP

Doctors are merely human; God is not.

Lawyers are merely human; God is not.

Docs are finite & fallen; God is not.

Lawyers are finite & fallen; God is not.

God is ABSOLUTELY in control of EVERYTHING.

So… people put their hope in lawyers & doctors, but not in God (we hate Him …we blame Him). People get mad at God, but we don’t receive counsel – or Isa. 30:15 – from Him because we can only find the faith to blame Him, but we can muster nothing beyond that.

Hebrews 11:1 – that’s the adapter you MUST have for a pastor to be any good to you. …You must have certain things in order for certain people to be of any use to you. For example, you must have a desire to do cocaine in order for a drug dealer to be of any benefit to you. You see the point (pick your own parallel).

Finally – – – she’s mad that SBSP doesn’t want to be with her. The question she ought to consider is – does she want to be with Mr. Dsigma x2? No! Why? B/c he threatens to remove what she’s addicted to (or – more specifically – the thing she needs in order to “finance” or “fondle” her addiction). It is her bastardized Heb. 11:1 – it is her portal, her conduit …the means by which she gets her drug. So… SBSP doesn’t want to be w/ someone who won’t allow him to have the thing he most wants. …*Probably also – there’s some “warranted” bitterness.

A G-Chat Msg to J. Harwood

Hey bro. Looking forward to meeting w/ you and Schnee for prayer triad this evening. …This communication is in ref. to the Sermon & Service plan for this upcoming Sunday 3/20 (Palm Sunday).  PALM BRANCHES are the symbol of VICTORY – so songs that have to do with VICTORY are in order. …*Be Thou My Vision mentions Victory (and the passage has much to do with ‘How we perceive & see reality’ – specifically as we have been given a new primary and more fundamental identity as Citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven!). The passage talks emphatically of our SECURITY and SATISFACTION in Christ Alone. *What songs come to mind that address and emphasize these themes? …The title of the sermon is “The Society of Heaven” and the outline is – – – > I. The Seal (God’s Seal).  II. The Sealed (the ppl of God …how many are there? …and who are they [i.e. what KIND of ppl are we talking about] *come ye sinners would be fitting here).  III. The Society of Heaven (ppl who rest secure in the salvation that is theirs – found in Christ Alone, and SAVOR the story of their salvation.  PPL who believe w/ all their heart, soul, mind, and strength that their status and standing in the presence of God rests NOT in their own merit – but in the Merit Mercy & Grace found in Christ Alone).

*here are some bonus “notes” that I currently have in my reminders (noted again here because I like to be reminded of these things):

  1. Add “Examine Thy Self” to Roots Class material (had a great conversation with Jim, Peggy, and Jason about this last Wednesday (3/9). …And afterwards we saw a very large cargo plane (a Russian plane called “Antonov”).
  2. Trophy for…
  3. ***Metaphors [Marriage & Driving]. Examine Thy Self. “U ready to be married?!?”
  4. Repent of “self-sufficiency” & surrender yourself to S.L.
  5. ***Warning [Danger] *Nominalism. *Consumerism. *Many people in the church don’t have a oil for their lamps. *Why do you love Jesus so much? Really? …Really?
  6. Fishing… Certain Bait Catches Certain Fish. [ECPC Bait = 1 Cor. 2.2]
  7. Hab. 3:2 in Wrath Remember Mercy…
  8. Why did you choose to give up your autonomy? …Why did you choose to restrict and limit yourself by deciding to exist???

John 15:19 – The world would love you as one of its own if you belonged to it, but you are no longer part of the world. I chose you to come out of the world, so it hates you. Where’s home? Primary citizenship? Treasure?

1 Peter 2:9 – But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people to be his very own and to proclaim the wonderful deeds of the one who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Who’s wonderful deeds to you proclaim? 3/8/16 = Manning (retired yesterday). In Barcelona (Messi).

James 4:4 – You adulterers! Don’t you know that friendship with the world means hostility with God? So whoever wants to be a friend of this world is an enemy of God. BFF? They invent new ways of sinning, and they disobey their parents. They refuse to understand, break their promises, are heartless, and have no mercy.

John 15:21 – They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the one who sent me.

John 3:19-21 – This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.

Matthew 5:14-15 – “You are the light of the world–like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father. But ppl hat the light! …so here we come reflect shining like the moon – what are they going to do to us?

Ephesians 2:8-9 – For by grace you are saved through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God; it is not from works, so that no one can boast. …but [BUT] we LOVE our self-absorbed boasting! Don’t take away our self-centered boasting! We’ll DIE w/o it!

This calls for wisdom: let the one who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man, and his number is 666.

Acts 19:24-27 – Demetrius, a silversmith, was in the business of making silver models of the temple of Artemis. His business brought a huge profit for the men who worked for him. He called a meeting of his workers and others who did similar work. Demetrius said, “Men, you know that we’re earning a good income from this business, and you see and hear what this man Paul has done. He has won over a large crowd that follows him not only in Ephesus but also throughout the province of Asia. He tells people that gods made by humans are not gods. There’s a danger that people will discredit our line of work, and there’s a danger that people will think that the temple of the great goddess Artemis is nothing. Then she whom all Asia and the rest of the world worship will be robbed of her glory.”

They’re telling you how you can be saved.” She kept doing this for many days. Paul became annoyed, turned to the evil spirit, and said, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her!”As Paul said this, the evil spirit left her.
